The White Tower Then and Now

A very interesting lantern slide of the Tower of London's White Tower from the Victorian era.

In the center is the medieval Wardrobe Tower (though much covered up by later additions to it). To the right is an annex built by King Edward III.

Despite the protest of antiquarians wanting to preserve all of the White Tower's medieval components, the Wardrobe Tower and the annex were sadly demolished in 1879. Only the base of the Wardrobe Tower remains to show where it was.

The second photo shows the White Tower as it is today. On the south side, near where the wooden staircase is now, was the royal Jewel House. In 1532, Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn brought the French ambassador there for a visit.
